Praying Together as a Couple: Why It Changes Everything
There’s Something Powerful About Hearing Your Name in Prayer
I love when I hear my husband talking to God about me.
There’s something deeply personal about it.
Every time he prays for me… I feel closer to him.
And when Seth hears me praying for him? He’s often brought to tears.
It’s like catching someone saying something kind about you when you didn’t expect it.
It feels good every single time.
Prayer Connects You in a Way Nothing Else Can
There are many ways to connect in marriage:
Talking.
Spending time together.
Serving each other.
But prayer?
Prayer connects you spiritually, emotionally, and relationally all at once.
Because when you pray together…
You’re not just turning toward each other.
You’re turning toward God—together.
A Moment That Changed Everything
There was a time in our life that felt incredibly overwhelming.
Seth was in an advanced Army flight training course.
We were remodeling our home—ourselves.
We were living near extended family.
We had just adopted our son.
And we had a four-year-old daughter.
On top of all that…
I was experiencing constant migraines.
It was a lot.
One day, we were standing in the middle of our unfinished kitchen—dust, tools, chaos all around us—
arguing. Loudly.
Not my finest moment.
And then something happened I will never forget.
Seth dropped to his knees…
and started praying out loud.
I was stunned.
How could I argue with a man while he was talking to God?
How could I stay angry at a man who was bringing me—
and our marriage—before the throne of our Abba Father?
The argument stopped immediately.
But more than that…
It changed our marriage—for the good—forever.
Prayer Shifts the Atmosphere
That moment taught me something powerful:
Prayer doesn’t just change conversations…
It changes hearts.
It softens anger.
It brings clarity.
It replaces tension with peace.
Prayer Changes Things
Prayer is not just comforting. It’s powerful.
It can:
Change the outcome of situations
Bring peace in uncertainty
Restore emotional connection
Bring healing—spiritual, emotional, and even physical
In God’s time… and in His way.
When the Situation Doesn’t Change
Sometimes we pray…
And the situation doesn’t immediately go away.
That’s when I learned to pray differently:
“Lord, if You’re not going to remove me from this situation… bring me through it.”
Bring me:
More wisdom
More knowledge
More understanding
Because sometimes the greater miracle…
is what God does in us, not just around us.
Prayer Brings You Closer to God—and Each Other
God is the creator of:
Love
Marriage
Relationships
So when we go to Him…
We are going to the source. When couples pray together:
They align their hearts
They invite God into their decisions
They create unity
And unity strengthens everything.
Pray About Real Life—Together
Prayer isn’t just for big moments.
It’s for everyday life.
Pray together about:
Finances and financial needs
Parenting decisions
Health concerns
Work and responsibilities
Direction for your future
Nothing is too small.
Nothing is too big.
God Has a Plan—For Both of You
One of my favorite reminders comes from Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord…
Isn’t that incredible?
he God of the universe—Yahweh—has a plan for you.
And…
He has a plan for your spouse too.
A Powerful Picture of Prayer in Marriage
If you’ve seen War Room, you’ve seen a powerful example of what prayer can do in a marriage.
It reminds us:
The real battle is not against each other. It’s fought in prayer.
It doesn’t have to be long.
It just has to be intentional.
You Don’t Have to Do It Perfectly
If praying together feels awkward at first—that’s okay.
Start simple:
Pray for each other out loud
Hold hands and pray briefly
Take turns
Small Prayers Build Strong Marriages
Every time you pray together…
You are building something stronger than emotion. You are building a spiritual foundation.
